HIGH POINT, N.C. — A 48-year-old woman was struck and killed by a vehicle Saturday night while checking on an injured animal in the roadway, High Point police said.

Officers with the High Point Police Department, the High Point Fire Department, and Guilford County EMS responded around 9 p.m. to the 2800 block of Westchester Drive. Paramedics transported the victim, Tu Cam Phan, to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, where she was pronounced dead.

Preliminary investigation shows Phan had stopped her vehicle in the center turn lane and got out to check on the animal when she was hit by an oncoming car. The driver stayed at the scene, cooperated with law enforcement, and is not suspected of speeding or impairment. No charges are expected, police said.
