TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Sunday marked the first Pink Pancakes for a Purpose event, founded by a woman who lost her mother to breast cancer.

Shavonne McCants said spreading awareness on the impact of breast cancer has also helped in her healing journey.

“I lost my mother in 2009 to breast cancer,” McCants said. “So, I just wanted to spread awareness and, hopefully, raise some funds to go toward breast cancer research, so that the feeling and the grief I felt in losing my mom, that others won’t have to go through that same pain.”

More than 300 pink pancakes were served Sunday morning, and the event was free for everyone. McCants said she recently joined the Rotary Club of Tallahassee and decided to launch the chapter’s first breast cancer awareness event in honor of her late mother.
