A security company is challenging Washington state’s new sales tax expansion law, and has asked a judge to block it until litigation is concluded.

The law went into effect on October 1, applying sales tax to services like digital advertising, live performances, alarm video monitoring and security services among others.

Security Services Northwest argues that the law violates the state Constitution and that businesses, schools, and organizations will reduce security as a result of the tax.

The Washington state Constitution prohibits “taxing frontline safety services while exempting comparable professional services” in Article VII.
