ST. HELENA ISLAND — Four people died and at least 20 others were injured during a mass shooting outside a Beaufort County bar and restaurant that was hosting a private event.

Hundreds of people attended the Battery Creek High School alumni tailgate at Willie’s Bar and Grill on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, owner Willie Turral told The Post and Courier. The celebration began on Oct. 11 and carried into the early hours of Oct. 12, when shots erupted outside the security barrier of the St. Helena establishment just before 1 a.m.

Victims and witnesses ran to nearby businesses and properties to seek shelter from the bullets as deputies with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office began arriving, according to an Oct. 12 statement from the department.
