An off-duty police officer assisted in rescuing a driver from his burning vehicle following a crash in Passaic County on Saturday, police said.

Investigators found the vehicle caught fire after the driver lost control and struck two vehicles in the area of Barbour and Oxford streets in Haledon, authorities said.

Haledon Police Detective Sgt. Semir Celoski, along with his father, were nearby and responded to the scene after hearing the crash, according to police.

They observed the driver trapped inside the burning vehicle and safely removed him before it became fully engulfed in flames, authorities said.

Firefighters from the Haledon and Paterson fire departments arrived shortly after and quickly extinguished the blaze, police said.

The driver was taken to an area hospital for treatmen
