GREENSBORO, N.C. — One week ago, 10-year-old Alonzo Rodriguez was on the field — making blocks, laughing with teammates, and playing the game he loved. Days later, his family and teammates were mourning his sudden death .

Alonzo died Wednesday after being hospitalized with cold-ike symptoms, said his mom. Despite the heartbreak, his 10U Cougars football team decided to play their weekend game — in his honor.

Before kickoff, players, coaches, and families gathered for a moment of silence. Both teams lined up on the 38-yard line for the National Anthem.

“Alonzo, you may no longer be with us in person, but your light, your laughter, and your love for the game will forever be a part of this team,” an announcer said to the crowd.
