HOUSTON — On the morning of June 7, 1997, a security guard made a grisly discovery in an empty field in southwest Houston.

The security guard found the body of 14-year-old Erica Garcia at the site of what used to be the old Alief General Hospital. Erica had been brutally beaten and raped. Investigators said they think her own clothing was used to kill her.

It's been more than 28 years since her death, but family members and investigators are still holding out hope that justice will be served.

KHOU 11 News reported on the cold case a few years ago. We talked to Erica's mother, who, after all these years, still didn't understand why anyone would want to hurt her daughter.
