Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the nation on Sunday, acknowledging the divisions surrounding the Gaza ceasefire deal while urging unity as the release of hostages held by Hamas approaches. In a televised speech, he expressed mixed emotions, stating, "This is an emotional evening, an evening of tears, an evening of joy, because tomorrow our children will return to our borders." He emphasized that this moment marks the start of a new journey towards rebuilding and healing, hoping for a "path of united hearts."

Netanyahu's comments come amid criticism from various political factions in Israel. Families of hostages have accused him of prioritizing military objectives over the safe return of their loved ones. Simultaneously, right-wing coalition members have opposed the release of Palestinian prisoners as part of the agreement. Netanyahu remarked, "This is a historic event that mixes sorrow over the release of murderers with joy over the return of hostages," acknowledging the disagreements but calling for unity on this significant day.

He confirmed that Israel is prepared to receive the hostages expected to be freed on Monday, stating, "Israel is prepared and ready for the immediate reception of all our hostages." While he noted the achievements made during two years of conflict, he cautioned that the fight is not yet over, saying, "Very large security challenges still lie before us."

In conjunction with these developments, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the launch of Operation "Returning Home" to facilitate the return of the hostages. Lt Gen Eyal Zamir, Israel’s Chief of the General Staff, stated, "In a few hours we will all be reunited - one people, embraced and united." He highlighted that the operation is a result of two years of military and diplomatic efforts, declaring it a victory over Hamas. Zamir added, "We will continue to act in order to ensure the Gaza Strip no longer poses a threat to the State of Israel and its civilians."

Despite these efforts, Israel will not participate in the US-led peace summit on Gaza scheduled for Monday in Sharm el-Sheikh, co-hosted by President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, as confirmed by Netanyahu’s spokeswoman.
