Heading into the bottom of the final inning of the 1A state championship game on Saturday, the Panguitch High School baseball team faced what their coach called a “nearly impossible” task.

Although Panguitch had defeated archrival Piute 12-2 earlier in the afternoon to force a deciding second game, the Bobcats found themselves trailing 9-4 heading into the last of the seventh.

Panguitch head coach Rawley Burningham said he was going through a “rollercoaster of emotions” as the team came up to bat.

“After leadoff man Quade Veater got on, followed by a couple of walks, is when it really hit me that we had a chance,” he said.
