Although Grey’s Anatomy fans have endured plenty of loss over the years, Shonda Rhimes has avoided the emotional impact of a couple of characters’ deaths until recently.

The Golden Globe winner admitted the deaths of Lexie Grey ( Chyler Leigh ) and Mark Sloan ( Eric Dane ) played out “like a freaking snuff film” upon her recent rewatch of the medical drama, which debuted Season 22 this month.

“You have to think about the fact that I haven’t really watched the show,” the series creator prefaced on the Call Her Daddy podcast.

“So I recently went back and I started watching select pieces of episodes. I watched that episode, and I was horrified. I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is like a freaking snuff film.’ Like, what the heck?”
