Harrison Butker better start showing more signs of reliability soon.
After missing an extra point following the Chiefs' first touchdown on Sunday night, the long-time Kansas City Chiefs kicker is showing some glaring inaccuracy lately. At the time of this writing, we're not even six games into the Chiefs' season, and Butker has already missed three field goals and three extra points. For posterity, Butker missed four field goals and two extra points in the entire 2024 season.
Suffice it to say, the Chiefs officially have a kicker problem. While it's probably still too early to say the Chiefs are ready to move on from Butker, a few more wayward kicks would certainly change that thought process. Let's take a look at how easy (or hard) it would be for the Chiefs to part ways with Butker.
How many years does Butker have left on his Chiefs contract?
According to Over The Cap, Butker is signed through the 2028 season. He is set to make roughly $5.7 million per year over the next three seasons beyond 2025.
How much would it cost the Chiefs to release Harrison Butker?
If the Chiefs released Butker at any point during the 2025 season, they would incur $15.1 million in dead cap. If they released him in 2026, the dead cap would be $10 million. Then, it would be $10 million in 2027 and $1.4 million in 2028.
What would it take for the Chiefs to release Harrison Butker?
Anything could happen, but that dead cap hit for 2025 makes me think it's doubtful the Chiefs actually release Butker over the next three months. Barring an absolute disaster-class kicking job, he will probably remain on the roster through the rest of the season. A team with contender aspirations, like the Chiefs, usually wants to maintain as much stability as possible.
Be wary about the coming offseason, though. Unless Butker really picks it up, that's when I think the Chiefs might start putting new kicker plans into motion.
