AKRON, Ohio — It’s been a week since 25-year-old Timothy Hutchinson was tragically killed in Akron’s Highland Square neighborhood.

Police say he was an innocent bystander, struck by a stray bullet as two people opened fire last Sunday morning.

“We were inside just working, and then we had heard, like a couple gunshots, and someone had actually ran into our bar yelling at us to lock our doors,” said Alyssa Shipley, an employee at Highland Tavern.

The gunfire led city officials to meet with Ward 1 residents last week to talk about ramping up safety measures in the popular entertainment district, especially during weekend nights.

Mayor Shammas Malik said for the foreseeable future, officers will be assigned to patrol the area on Friday and Saturday nights — something Shipley, who works
