Donald Trump has declared that the war in Gaza “is over” as Israel prepares for the imminent release of hostages who have been held in the territory for the last two years.

The president said “people are tired of it” as he flew to the region for a historic peace summit.

A ceasefire has been in place since last Friday after both Israel and Hamas agreed to Trump’s 20-point peace plan.

Speaking on board Air Force One, Trump told reporters: “It’s been centuries [of fighting]... not just recent.

“I think people are tired of it. Yeah, the ceasefire is going to hold.”

He added: “The war is over. The war is over, you understand that?”
