A Tamworth councillor is proposing a survey to decide how the city's mayor should be elected.
Stephen Mears will put forward the motion at Tuesday night's council meeting.
If it gets the green light, the survey will ask residents if the mayor should be elected by popular vote or by the councillors.
Currently, the councillors decide.
The debate around how the mayor is elected is well-trodden territory.
Crs Mears and fellow councillor Mark Rodda have introduced motions to change it, by Cr Mears' recollection, three times in his three-and-a-half years on council.
Each time, it has been rejected "for whatever reason".
The issue has been bubbling away again since the 2024 September election, with some in the community critical of Russell Webb's reelection as mayor , after his challen
