Two women have drowned in the Shire River after the canoe they were traveling in capsized near Tengani Dock in Nsanje District.

Nsanje Police Station spokesperson Agnes Zalakoma identified the victims as Maria Kingston and Diana Patrick, both residents of Chokolo Village, under Senior Chief Tengani in the district.

According to Zalakoma, the tragic incident occurred on Saturday as the two women were crossing from the Mozambique side to the Malawi shore.

She said: “The two went missing, and on Sunday, October 12, they were found floating by people who were on a search operation at Kailedze area, about five hundred metres from where the canoe capsized.”

A postmortem conducted at Nsanje District Hospital confirmed that the cause of death was suffocation secondary to drowning.
