Director Derek Cianfrance pitched “Roofman” as a Frank Capra-style movie, but was repeatedly told Hollywood “doesn’t make those movies anymore.”

The Christmas film stars Channing Tatum as real-life thief Jeffrey Manchester, with Kirsten Dunst playing a working mother who embraces him.

Cianfrance’s immersive approach had actors actually work at the Toys “R” Us set, with Peter Dinklage conducting Dunst’s real job interview.

“We’ve been doing this for a while now,” laughs Channing Tatum, “and every once in a while a new thing comes out I haven’t heard.”
