More than 30 candidates across Iowa will have to undergo write-in campaigns in November's city and school elections after municipal officials failed to file candidate paperwork by a state-mandated deadline.

At least 34 candidates' names are off November ballots after six city clerks and three school board secretaries in seven counties didn't meet the deadline for candidate nomination papers, Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate said in a news release. None were in the Des Moines metro.

“We are disappointed to hear of the errors made by multiple school board secretaries and city clerks, considering we have provided these officials with extensive training resources and conducted detailed training sessions,” Pate said in a statement.
