Tropical Storm Lorenzo formed in the Atlantic Ocean early Monday morning, becoming the 12th named storm of the 2025 hurricane season.

Lorenzo had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and was moving northwest at 17 mph, according to National Hurricane Center in its 4 a.m. update.

The storm is expected to slow down later Monday as it approaches an upper-level trough, which will result in the system making a northerly turn, the NHC forecaster Philippe Papin said.

Lorenzo is expected to eventually start moving northeast and remain at tropical storm strength over open waters of the Atlantic. However, Papin said, intensity models are not in agreeance, with some showing Lorenzo could possibly strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane.
