The leading cause of death in New York in 2023 was heart disease, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
New York had a heart disease death rate of 152.8 per 100,000 people in 2023, the most recent year for which CDC numbers are available. That was tied for the 33rd-highest rate in the nation and translated into over 41,000 deaths from heart disease in the state in 2023.
New York’s No. 2 cause of death in 2023 was cancer, which was responsible for more than 32,000 deaths in the state. New York’s cancer death rate of 120.6 per 100,000 people was the second-lowest in the nation in 2023.
Only Hawaii had a lower cancer death rate that year at 119 per 100,000.
