A key ally of Vladimir Putin appeared to warn that Donald Trump could trigger a nuclear war if he gives Ukraine long-range Tomahawk missiles.

Former Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev spoke out after the US president said he could be prepared to provide Kyiv with the means to launch strikes deep into enemy territory.

“I might tell [Putin], if the war is not settled, we may very well do it,” Trump said on Sunday. “We may not, but we may do it ... do they want to have Tomahawks going in their direction? I don’t think so.”

In a post on Telegram, Medvedev, a noted Russian hawk, said it is impossible to distinguish between Tomahawk missiles carrying nuclear warheads and conventional ones after they are launched.
