GRIFFITH — A local police officer was injured when a driver fled a traffic stop and in the process, drove over the officer's leg, according to Griffith police.

"The injured officer was taken to the hospital for evaluation and is currently recovering at home," according to Griffith police.

The accused, James Shasteen, of Schererville, was later apprehend after attempting to flee on foot and is charged with felony counts of resisting law enforcement causing serious bodily injury and possession of cocaine, and resisting law enforcement as a misdemeanor, police said.

Police say the incident occurred Friday evening near the intersection of Broad Street and West Glen Park Avenue.

Shasteen fled the traffic stop and was later located in Highland, police said.
