The province’s announcement to move Albertans receiving disability assistance to a new program that would see them receive $200 less a month has the community scared, frustrated and feeling isolated.

Advocates say the move further stigmatizes an already vulnerable population and preys on harmful stereotypes that dismiss what someone living with a disability goes through on a daily basis.

“Ask them how many square meals a day they get, how many leisure activities they get to attend, how many doctor appointments they can go to,” said Doug Manderville, president of Voice of Albertans with Disabilities, an advocacy non-profit.
