In the northeast, apple picking is an autumn tradition, a rite of passage for many New Yorkers.

It was something I wanted to do with my kids since they were very young.

But during their early years, we didn’t live near the apple orchards of my memories , and we couldn’t schedule a trip to the Northeast that coincided with the harvest.

Three years ago, we moved to New York .

Then, my two teenagers immersed themselves in school and sports. Friends, family and other activities filled our weekends, and we still didn’t have the time to explore the orchards in the fall.

This past weekend, with my son home from college and my daughter free from any high school obligations, I made my request.

Please, can we go apple picking? My kids humored me with a yes.
