CHARLESTON (WV News) — Gov. Patrick Morrisey signed a proclamation recognizing Monday as Columbus Day in West Virginia.

The governor affirmed the state’s support for honoring the significance of Christopher Columbus’s historic and daring voyage to the “New World” and the subsequent age of discovery, which led to the formation of European colonies and the founding of the United States.

“Today we reflect on the remarkable vision and boldness of Christopher Columbus that forged a new chapter in human history,” said Governor Morrisey. “Columbus Day is an opportunity for West Virginians to celebrate the enduring spirit of exploration, determination, and progress that helped shape the foundation of our great nation.”
