ASHEVILLE – Now in its second week, the shutdown of the federal government is having minimal impact on homelessness and affordable housing programs in Western North Carolina, local service providers say.

But that could change, they told the Citizen Times, if the shutdown drags on.

Jessie Figueroa, resource development director at Homeward Bound, an Asheville-based homelessness service provider, said the shutdown has yet to have a significant effect on services. She told the Citizen Times Oct. 10 that the organization, which receives grants for permanent supportive housing from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, is in a “holding pattern” as it watches the shutdown play out.
