A Washington farmworker with no criminal record gave up his legal fight after being detained, denied bond and separated from his family.

Voluntary departures nearly doubled to 15,241 cases last fiscal year as ICE began opposing bond for anyone detained regardless of their circumstances.

A federal judge ruled denying bond hearings unlawful in September, but the decision came too late for many who already left.
