The School City of East Chicago cancelled a service learning field trip to Sunday's Chicago Marathon, as the city deals with ongoing immigration raids and deployment of National Guard troops.
In a social media post Saturday night , the district said it had canceled the trip out of "an abundance of caution."
"Students and staff safety must be our priority during these uncertain times," the district wrote.
School officials added that they would work with East Chicago Central High School administrators in finding another opportunity for students scheduled to work the marathon to earn those service hours.
