HOUSTON (KIAH) — City leaders broke ground on a new multi-million-dollar project to expand Houston’s historic Emancipation Park.

Mayor John Whitmire and other leaders held the groundbreaking ceremonies at the $18.5 million expansion shows the city’s investment into the park, located in Houston’s Third Ward. The project is expected to be completed by June of 2026.

“You know, we're witnessing in real time Houston's greatness. While most of the large cities in America are in turmoil, disagreements, political fights,” Whitmire said. “I could go on and on. What's ripping other large cities apart? Today, we're celebrating a huge expansion of one of our jewels. So I'm very excited to be here.”
