Dept. of Education lays off nearly half of Special Ed staff

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Education has laid off nearly half of its special education staff, the union representing employees said Monday.

It is not yet clear exactly how many workers were affected. A letter to staff said the layoffs were due to the ongoing government shutdown.

The union said the move will have a big impact on the department’s work supporting students with disabilities.
