A pedestrian walking along Interstate 12 in Tangipahoa Parish early Monday was struck by a car and killed, State Police said.

State Police said Dentreal A. Mouton, 24, of Lafayette, was in the left lane of the roadway when a westbound Honda Accord struck him around 1:20 a.m.

State Police said the death remains under investigation. Mouton was declared dead at the scene, which was just west of Hammond.

Routine toxicology samples were taken from the driver of the Accord as well as Mouton, State Police said. The Honda driver was properly restrained, they said.

In a news release Monday, State Police urged pedestrians and motorists to remain alert and aware of their surroundings while on or near roadways and advised pedestrians to wear reflective clothing, walk or stand in well-lighted areas
