The credits are rolling for first-run movies on the big screen of the Hoosier Theatre. Classic films are making a welcome return.

Owner John Katris, whose parents ran the Voge Theater in East Chicago, restored the historic century-old movie palace at 1335 119th St. in downtown Whiting to its former glory more than three decades ago. He's been looking to sell the lavishly designed 614-seat Hoosier Theatre for a few years, having to run it himself after the longtime manager died.

He said the decision to stop showing new movies was due to a a lack of in-person attendance during a time when streaming services are keeping people home.
