The Portage Township School Board voted Monday night to name its future middle school building after an elementary school set to be torn down next year.

Board members voted unanimously to rename the upcoming school building Aylesworth Middle School at 5910 Central Ave. in Portage once it was completed.

The new building is set to replace the current Willowcreek Middle School when construction is completed in 2029. The current Aylesworth Elementary School is set to be closed and demolished beginning next summer.

According to Melissa Deavers, the director of communication and community engagement for the district, the name was proposed to honor former Portage Township Superintendent Wallace Aylesworth.
