Trader Joe’s Halloween-themed mini tote bags are having a moment.
Since the “Trick-or-Treat Mini Canvas Totes” became available for purchase at Trader Joe’s stores nationwide on Oct. 8, customers have been posting reviews, customizing their bag on camera, or simply fangirling on social media.
The viral bags, despite Black Friday-like lines and third-party resales, have amassed a fan base among Trader Joe’s customers, who continue to flock to their neighborhood store whenever a new style drops.
While the season’s most coveted accessory, available in four colorways, is here now, it won’t be available for long.
“If you’re a dedicated TJ’s Mini Tote collector (really, who isn’t?), these Trick-or-Treat Mini Totes are major must-haves,” Trader Joe’s said in a statement. “Grab one at your neighborhood Trader Joe’s today, before they vanish into the night!”
Here’s what we know, including how long you have to get it if you haven’t yet.
How long will Trader Joe’s ‘Trick-or-Treat Mini Canvas Totes’ be in stock?
Nakia Rohde, a Trader Joe’s spokesperson, told USA TODAY on Monday, Oct. 13, that availability of the Trader Joe’s “Trick-or-Treat Mini Canvas Totes” will vary by store, but it is a “limited-time” offering.
“If customers have any questions about product availability, they can ask any Crew Member in their neighborhood store.”
The “Mini Trick-or-Treat Canvas Tote Bags are ideal for candy-collecting adventures, seasonal gifting (bags filled with treats for your boo = boo-bags!), quick grocery runs, or any small haul that needs a sturdy, reusable carrier, according to Trader Joe’s.
Hype for Trader Joe’s mini canvas tote bags began online
The hype surrounding the mini canvas tote bags started with a few viral social media videos in March 2024, approximately one month after Trader Joe’s initially released the product in stores.
It didn’t take long for a frenzy of epic proportions to ensue, as troves of netizens, including Trader Joe’s customers, raced to their neighborhood store to get their hands on the bags.
Footage captured and posted to social media by customers showed lines wrapped around stores, crowds gathered around the display, as well as individuals grabbing and paying for multiple bags.
As a result of the overwhelming, unexpected popularity, individual stores were often forced to limit the number of bags customers could purchase.
The “mini canvas tote bags certainly sold more quickly than we anticipated. Before we had the opportunity to promote them in any way, customers across the country found them at their neighborhood Trader Joe’s,” Rohde told USA TODAY in March 2024.
The mini canvas tote bags, which retail for $2.99, also began to appear on third-party online marketplaces like Facebook and eBay, with listings ranging from $8 to $500.
Around that time, Trader Joe’s made it clear it was aware of the resellers, adding that it was “done without our approval or authorization and outside the controls of our quality-minded supply chain.”
The company continued, “To be clear, we neither condone nor support the reselling of our products and do all we can to stop the practice.”
