The Better Business Bureau of Rockford is warning job seekers to be wary of scams this holiday season.
Employment scams were the third most reported scam from May to September, according to the BBB's ScamTracker. Financial losses during that time exceeded $85,000, according to a community announcement.
"With fewer jobs and greater urgency, this is an open opportunity for scammers to scale up their efforts to rip off the general public," Dennis Horton, Rockford Regional Office senior director, said in the announcement.
Scammers are posing as representatives from major companies like Amazon and Target, using emails, texts and calls to trick job seekers. They conduct fake interviews and ask for personal information like Social Security numbers and banking details, according to the announce
