COLUMBIA, S.C. — Former Lowcountry banker Russell Laffitte , who helped disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh with multiple financial schemes has been sentenced to eight years behind bars.

Laffitte learned his fate Monday morning at a courthouse in downtown Columbia.

Judge Heath Taylor sentenced Laffitte to eight years in state prison which will run concurrently with the five-year sentence handed down by the federal court earlier this month. It's possible that some of the state prison sentence could be reduced for good behavior and he will get credit for some time already served in jail.

He was also given five years probation and and 350 hours of community service (there is no probation for the federal sentence).

Laffitte has also paid more than $3.5 million in restitution and is prohibited
