ST. CLAIR SHORES, MI — Macomb County wins a contest no local government wants to.

It’s home to the most frequently closed beach in Michigan.

The beach at Veterans Memorial Park in St. Clair Shores was closed or under an advisory for 53 days this year — far outpacing other beaches in Michigan with multiple closures, according to a new analysis from the Environmental Law and Policy Center (ELPC) in Chicago.

The beach on Lake St. Clair, which goes by St. Clair Shores Memorial Park in state record-keeping, is tested twice per week by the Macomb County Health Department. The beach struggles with bacterial contamination that county officials call a troublesome problem with no easy solution.
