NATO's chief has ridiculed Vladimir Putin's naval capabilities , suggesting a Russian submarine was "limping" back to port. Russia's Black Sea Fleet has rejected claims that the Novorossiysk was experiencing technical difficulties, insisting it only surfaced near the French coastline to adhere to navigation regulations whilst passing through the English Channel.
The Kilo-class vessel was photographed travelling on the surface last week whilst being monitored by NATO warships, including a Royal Navy frigate.
