The federal energy minister isn’t wrong about Alberta having work to do to make tangible progress on a proposed pipeline.

However, Tim Hodgson’s suggested to-do list has its priorities askew.

At a time when Canada’s economy desperately needs the jolt and confidence boost of a major new pipeline, and at a time when Canadians — even those in B.C. — are hungry for such a project, we are not being well-served by those in positions of power.

As the bickering and name-calling intensifies between the premiers of Alberta and B.C., it’s apparently given Ottawa an excuse to take a step back.

Hodgson said last week that Alberta is going to have to find a way to win over B.C. if this project is to move forward, while saying the feds could “be a constructive participant in that three-way discussion
