Vancouver’s comedy scene is booming. But making ends meet by making people laugh is no joke for comedians and comedy venues.

While the booming business is great for fans, prevailing economic factors can wipe the smile off the faces of club operators.

“What’s difficult for comedy club owners in Vancouver is the same for everyone else; the state of the real estate market,” said Eric Lapointe, CEO of Icarus Capital, owner of the Yuk Yuk’s comedy clubs in Surrey and Calgary. “There are few comedy-only clubs, and ours in Surrey is a hybrid where we partner with Elements Casino. In Vancouver city proper, the comedy scene is booming with stand ups filling the club void by setting up their own shows in various places.”
