Meghan McCain is opening up about how pregnancy prevented her from being by her mother's side following a "mild" stroke earlier this month.
McCain, 40, a television personality and the daughter of late Sen. John McCain and Cindy McCain, said that she had been waiting to share more about her 71-year-old mother's condition as she and her siblings worked to get all the information.
"My mother, Cindy McCain, who you all may or may not know, she did, in fact, suffer from a mild stroke last week," she said on an Oct. 14 episode of the "Citizen McCain" podcast, which she hosts. "I didn't talk about it on my social media because my brothers and my family and I were trying to, you know, figure out what was going on."
McCain revealed that her mother had been in Rome at the time, doing work on behalf of the U.N. World Food Program.
"She has now flown back to Arizona with my brother Jimmy and is recovering very well, is currently still in the hospital but will be leaving soon," the former "View" host told listeners. "She is cognitively completely fine. Talks just normal, like, that she always has and texting, and I've talked to her many times and to my family."
McCain, who is seven months pregnant, said she had not traveled to Arizona as it would not have been safe. Generally, air travel is considered safe prior to 36 weeks of pregnancy, the Mayo Clinic reports, though consulting with a health provider is advised.
"I am glad that she is in Arizona with my family," she said. "And for those of you asking why I'm not in Arizona with my family, I am seven months pregnant. I am not allowed to fly that far yet. I am actually going to my doctor tomorrow to see if I can get clearance to fly."McCain also revealed that while her mother is eager to leave the hospital, she is recovering well.
"She has some physical things that have happened as a result of the stroke, but … all things considered, it is mild, as the doctor said, and not intense, but still scary nonetheless," she told listeners. "I'm not going to tell you she's fine and everything's amazing, but like I said, thank God, (she's) cognitively completely fine."
