A man died early Tuesday morning in a house fire in Harpswell.

The fire broke out about 4:28 a.m. at the Harpswell Neck Road home, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

While battling the blaze, firefighters found 78-year-old Hugh MacFarland inside the two-story home. They brought him outside, but MacFarland died at the scene, Moss said.

The Maine medical examiner’s office in Augusta will determine MacFarland’s cause and manner of death.

The fire caused significant damage to the home. It remains under investigation.
