Will the government shutdown affect Social Security payments this month?
On Oct. 1, the federal government shut down as lawmakers failed to reach an agreement over funding, causing some services to close temporarily. Almost two weeks later, the shutdown is still in effect.
Several federal agencies, including the Social Security Administration (SSA), remain impacted. In Rhode Island, more than 200,000 people rely on Social Security payments every month.
Thousands of SSA employees have been furloughed, which has limited the agency's available services during the shutdown.
However, Social Security and Supplemental Security Income payments are continuing as usual despite the lapse in federal funding appropriations. These programs are not dependent upon approval from Congress.
