For the first time this season, two athletes produced equally great performances, both worthy of Athlete of the Week honors.

Kofa’s golf program had plenty to celebrate this week, as two of its standout juniors, Devyn Chavez and Jacqueline Smith, turned in career-best performances to claim the top individual honors at the YUHSD City Golf Championships.

In boys’ competition at Mesa del Sol on Tuesday, Chavez pulled off one of the biggest upsets in recent tournament history, edging out three-time defending city champion Trent Karvoski of Gila Ridge by a single stroke. The junior carded a 75, one under par, to take first place overall, with Karvoski close behind at even-par 76.
