WASHINGTON — As the government shutdown entered its 14th day Tuesday, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle continued to be miles apart with no consensus in sight.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., continued to blame Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for “inflicting untold pain on the American people” by refusing to back the Republicans’ funding proposal while Democrats ramped up their attacks on President Donald Trump and Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought for using the shutdown to fire federal workers.
