AUSTIN, Texas — The mother of slain Navy sailor Angelina Resendiz has announced her run for political office.

Esmeralda Cantu-Castle, mother of 21-year-old Resendiz, confirmed through family spokesperson Kimberly Wimbish that she is running for the Texas House of Representatives in District 37.

Cantu-Castle’s decision comes after her daughter’s death drew national attention and prompted calls for accountability within the U.S. Navy. Resendiz, a Mexia High School graduate, was found dead in June near Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia after being reported missing from her barracks on May 29.

Navy Seaman Jermiah T. Copeland has been charged with premeditated murder, obstruction of justice and multiple other offenses in connection with Resendiz’s death.
