The Philadelphia Film Festival, with screenings at multiple venues in the city, opens Oct. 16 with the Philadelphia premiere of “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” featuring the queer detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) tasked with solving another knotty crime. The festival closes Oct. 26 with “Sentimental Value,” a family drama that is generating Oscar buzz for its star, Stellan Skarsgård. In between, there are opportunities to get a sneak peek at buzzy films, including gay filmmaker Gus Van Sant’s latest, “Dead Man’s Wire” about a 1977 hostage crisis; “Christy,” starring Sydney Sweeney as the queer female boxer, Christy Martin; and out lesbian filmmaker Lucretia Martel’s documentary, “Nuestra Tierra,” about the 2009 murder of Javier Chocobar in Latin America.
