GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - More than a week after discovering racist banners hanging from the Eddy Street Bridge, a Grand Island resident is calling on his community to stand against hate and remember their shared humanity.
The banners, which Guillermo Peña removed himself, displayed messages such as “Deport Invaders” and “America First,” along with a website linked to a white nationalist group. Shortly after people noticed the signs, Mayor Roger Steele released a statement condemning the incident.
“I am deeply disappointed that someone chose to display a message like this on city property,” Steele said. “This act does not represent the values of our community or the people of Grand Island. We do not tolerate or condone acts like this in any form. Any signage placed on city property mus
