Title: New Brunswick Allocates $7.4 Million for Homeless Support
FREDERICTON – New Brunswick has announced a $7.4 million emergency funding initiative aimed at assisting homeless individuals through eligible non-profit housing providers. David Hickey, the minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation, shared details of the funding during a press conference on Tuesday.
Hickey emphasized that the financial support is intended for community organizations actively engaged in addressing homelessness. He stated that the funding will facilitate access to "supportive, transitional housing" for those in immediate need.
The government has identified several projects that could potentially create new housing opportunities before winter arrives, although Hickey did not provide specific figures on the number of new housing spots.
According to the Human Development Council, a non-profit organization that examines social issues in the province, over 900 individuals have been homeless for an extended period in major cities such as Saint John, Moncton, and Fredericton.
Hickey noted that the government has set a goal to reduce homelessness by 40 percent by the year 2029. This funding is part of a broader strategy to address the urgent needs of the homeless population in New Brunswick as winter approaches.
