GROVETOWN, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - As America approaches its 250th birthday, local history comes alive through the stories of those who lived it.

In Columbia County, former students of John Pierce Blanchard High School are ensuring their school’s legacy stays alive, even though the institution closed more than 50 years ago.

Margaret Adams, who finished her high school years at John Pierce Blanchard, remembers the profound impact her teachers had on her life.

“The teachers, I felt that they knew me, they saw me, they cared about me, and poured into me and helped groom me into who I was supposed to become,” Adams said.

The school operated from 1957 to 1970 during the era of segregation, serving as Columbia County’s only high school for Black students.
