CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein pushed back against lawmakers who are pushing to redraw the state's congressional districts , saying voters should pick their representatives, "not the other way around."

Stein made the comments following a meeting with the state's gang violence task force. He also criticized the General Assembly for not approving pay raises for educators and law enforcement while playing politics in Raleigh.

North Carolina is represented by 14 members in the U.S. House —10 Republicans and four Democrats. Leaders in the General Assembly plan to return to Raleigh next week to draw new lines that could favor more Republican candidates.
